Mayor

Except as otherwise restricted by town ordinance or resolution, the Mayor of the City of Myton has the following powers and duties:

• Is the chief executive officer of the town to who the employees of the municipality report;
• Shall:
  • Keep the peace and enforce the laws of the city;
  • ensures that all applicable statutes and city ordinances and resolutions are faithfully executed and observed; 
  • Performs all duties prescribed by statute or city ordinance or resolution;
  • Reports to the City Council on the condition and neeeds of the city;
• May:
  • Recommend for City Council considereation any measure tha the mayor considers to be in the best interest of the town;
  • Remit fines and forfeitures;
  • If necessary, call upon residents of the town 21 years and older to assist in enforcing the laws of the state and ordinances of the town;
  • Release a person from imprisoned for a violation of a town ordiance;
  • With the advice and consent of the City Council:
    • Assign or appoint a member of the council to administer one or more departments of the municipality; and 
    • Appoint a person to fill:
      • a city office; or
      • a vacancy on a commission or committee of the city; and
  • at any reasonable time, examine and inspect the official books, papers, records, or documents of:
    • the city; or
    • any officer, employee, or agency of the city.

The powers and duties of the mayor are generally executive and administrative and some can be altered by a majority vote of the City Council; however, no matter the alterations of the powers and duties of the Mayor from the City Council, the mayor will always maintain the legislative and judicial powers and ceremonial fundtions, the position as chair of the council, and any ex officio position that the mayor holds (Utah Code Annotated 10.3b.4-403).  When acting as a member of the council, the mayor utilizes the judicial and legislative authorities as do the other members of the council.
